What is Sports Massage?

Sports and Remedial Massage is a deep form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit people, who are feeling pain and/or tension or experiencing an injury.

The treatment is not just for the sporting individual; anyone can benefit from Sports/Remedial massage. The main aim of sports massage is to help alleviate the tension and stress that can build up in the soft tissues of the body.

Massage can effectively break down the minor injuries and lesions that can occur due to overuse and/or over exertion. It can also prevent those niggling issues that commonly get in the way of day to day life, performance and achievement.

Sports massage tends to be deeper and more intensive. The therapist will use a variety of techniques from Swedish massage and often incorporates other soft tissue techniques including, soft tissue release, frictions, compressions, stretching, MyoFascial release, trigger point, and muscle energy techniques.

What to expect during the treatment

When you first meet the therapist, they will begin with a consultation. This entails having a good chat about what issues you are presenting with and the therapist asking questions to build as much as a picture of what may be causing the presenting complaint(s).

The therapist will then ask to do a visual assessment of you standing and/or lying down to check your stance, posture and assess if there are any imbalances showing.

From the chat with yourself and the visual assessment your therapist will come up with a treatment plan with you before starting the treatment.

You will then be ask to lie on the couch in whichever position that suits the treatment you require best, this is likely to be when your therapist will go to wash their hands.

During the treatment your therapist will use techniques that they believe to be necessary for your presenting issues usually combined with warming and soothing massage strokes. They will communicate with you through out, to ensure your comfort and to assess your bodies reactions.

At the end of the massage your therapist will leave you to get dressed while they wash their hands. When they return your therapist will give you feedback to what they discovered during the treatment and will provide you suitable aftercare advice and stretches specific to your needs.
